COSHH Assessment

Do You Need a COSHH Assessment or any other risk assessments?

There are many hazards in a workplace, and they're not all marked as "hazardous." Some of the biggest ones fall into the category of "substances." These include everything from heavy-duty solvents and dyes to cleaning materials. In order to make sure that you have a good handle on them all, your company needs to have a COSHH assessment done.

According to the Health and Safety Executive, a COSHH assessment involves finding hazardous substances including liquids, pastes, dusts, fumes, gases, vapours, and mists among other things. You also need to know where exposure to these things is possible, as well as what can happen if someone is exposed. Many materials have data sheets, but those that arise from industrial processes, such as the fumes created by welding, do not. You should also know which jobs or tasks create exposure risks.

If there have been any mishaps involving substances, these should also be noted. The records for such events should be available to the company in an accident book or similar ledger.

Companies also need to have a more generalised safety risk assessment done. This is important for spotting hazards and then correcting or mitigating the risks that go with them. Procedural aspects, such as the keeping of an accident book (or lack thereof), will also be assessed with this service.

The best way to make sure that a safety risk assessment or COSHH assessment meets regulatory standards is to hire a safety consultant to do the job. Such a consultant knows what to look for and how to record everything so that regulations are met. If any problems are found, the consultant will advise you on what needs to be done to correct them.
